District Collector Sumit Kumar on Wednesday appealed to the representatives of mango pulp processing units and farmers’ associations to make a coordinated effort to ensure better returns to the ‘Totapuri’ mango growers during the current mango season.

Talking to the media here, the Collector said that Chittoor district has 31 mango pulping industries which purchase Totapuri mangoes from farmers and process them into pulp for domestic and industrial markets. He said payments to growers are linked to pulp sales, adding that this year’s mango crop should be higher than last year’s production.

Emphasizing the need for quality-based procurement, Mr. Sumit Kumar urged farmers to harvest the fruit only after it reaches proper maturity as well-ripened mangoes are likely to fetch better prices. He said the district has around 53,000 hectares where Totapuri is grown and he expects significant quantities to come during the season.

The Collector said that a large part of the production is supplied to markets in North India, while another significant part moves to the neighboring Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu. He added that he would discuss the matter with the Krishnagiri district administration to explore ways to ensure better prices for the growers.

Appealing to farmers to harvest quality fruits in three or four stages instead of one collection, Mr. Sumit Kumar said staggered deliveries would help processors maintain quality standards and offer more competitive prices.
