Commissioner Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Dyanacandra HM said on Saturday that it is a matter of pride that Vijayawada secured fourth in the 10 lakh+ population as the city of Swachh Super League, from the 4,589 cities that participated in SWACHH SURVEKSHAN-2024.
On Saturday, July 19, he spoke in the program “Swachh Andhra – Swarna Andhra” in Satyanarayanapurama and said that the price belongs to people, hygienic workers, officials who contributed to maintain cleanliness in the city. He also called on a ban on plastic with one use of less than 120 microns.
“From government authorities, schools, universities, compulsory plastic ban should be introduced with cooperation between people and business organizations. There should also be awareness of hostility of plastics,” he said.

The Commissioner explained the effects of plastic with one use and stated that it causes health problems not only for human beings but also for water animals. The layout of the plastic cover takes about 400 years. He encouraged people to use jute or cloth bags instead.
About 1,170 kg of seized plastic was shown during the program. The fines were introduced for stricter implementation of the ban, the Commissioner said.

Later, the Commissioner handed over the fabric bags to those who distributed plastic at the counter, specially set up for this program. Later, school students participated in the assembly to plant seedlings to reduce pollution and to create awareness of people to ban plastics with one use.
Meanwhile, at a press conference, Mayor Rayan Bhagyalakshmi praised the efforts of people and hygienic workers in winning the city award. She said it was the first time the city received a prize in the category of more than 10 lakh populations. The first three places went to Indore, Surrat and Navi Mumbai and Vijayawada secured the fourth, she said and expressed happiness.
Mrs. Bhagyalakshmi remembered that this was the second time, for the first time in 2021, that she had received the President’s prize. The city also received a prize in the “garbage free City” category.
Representatives of the Mayor of Bellam Durga, Sailaja Reddy and Ysrp the leader of the floor of Venkata Satyanarayan were also present in the press.
