Bengalur secured the 36th position of 44 cities in the category “over 10 lakh population” in Swachh Survekshan 2024, annual survey of cleanliness conducted by the Ministry of Housing and urban affairs (I can).
In the previous year, the category “over 10 lakh” was canceled. In 2022, however, Bengaluru was joined in 43. This year’s result means an improvement in eight positions compared to the 2022 ranking. In 2023, Bengalur was placed on 125.

Gujarat’s Ahmedabad overcame the category “over 10 lakh” with a score of 12 079, followed by Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) with 12,067 points and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) with 12 001. Bengaluru scored 6 842.
In the “Super Swachhh League City” category he secured Mysoru 5. Bengaluru stood in 15th place in the state ranking. Davangere appeared as the highest city in Karnataka with a score of 9 131, followed by Hubballi-Dharwad and Hosadurga.
“Room to improve”
The BBMP Commissioner M. Maleshwar Rao acknowledged that Bengaluru has room for improvement and expressed confidence in better results in the future. “We have good plans to manage building residues and fixed waste, which will improve our position in further survey. We are currently switching to an integrated fixed waste management system. Once it is introduced, we will evaluate better,” Rao Hindu said.
Activists, however, claim that Bengalur was supposed to do much better.
“Bengaluru loses the score in several parameters consistently since the last three Audits Swachh Survekshan, including waste processing,” said civil activist V. Ramprasad.
He said that Mouse had improved significantly, although he raised less money compared to Bengalur.
As it is calculated
The city’s local bodies (ULB) were quarterly evaluated in four phases. They updated their information system for management (MIS) per month, which was verified through citizens’ feedback and reviewed by third -party evaluators. During the final survey in February 2025, the progress of the indicator was documented and verified.
New indicators of Swachh Survekshan focused on cleanliness, waste segregation, collection, processing, landfill and landfill management, wastewater treatment, re -use and management of fecal sludge. I can do a virtual session with states and ULB to explain the methodology. The involvement of citizens was vital, supported by digital, social and traditional media campaigns to raise awareness and promote participation in the cleanliness mission.
