The National Medical Commission (NMC) rejected the state government’s proposal to launch three new medical faculties for the academic year 2025-26. It also did not allow the 800 MBBS seats at government medical universities, referring to the lack of necessary infrastructure and recruitment of faculties.
“We were hoping that this year we would receive permission to start three new medical faculties and strengthen medical seats at government medical faculties, but NMC rejected permission for both,” said Bl Sujath Rathoda, director of medical education.
The Medical Education Department submitted a proposal to establish three new medical faculties, including two government universities and one private – Ramanagar Institute of Medical Sciences in Ramanagara, Kanakapura Institute of Medical Sciences in Canacapore and Farooq Academy of Medical Science in Mysur – this year.
The state government has submitted proposals for the commencement of government medical faculties in Ramanagara and Kanakapura in the last three years. However, the NMC refused to initiate universities in 2023-24 and 2024-2025, referring to the same reasons.
The Faculty of Medicine in Ramanagara and Kanakapura are promoted by the Deputy Minister of DK Shivakumara, who organized several meetings with the Minister of Medical Education by Sharan Prakash Patil. Mr. Shivakuma instructed it to prepare the necessary preparations for the beginning of new medical faculties. This year, however, a request was submitted for the opening of universities without appointing the required pedagogical staff.
