NEW DELHI: Brazil’s journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup began with a special farewell ceremony as the five-time champions left for the tournament on Monday.The Brazilian squad received a traditional send-off at Galeao International Airport in Rio de Janeiro, where their team plane was “christened” before take-off. The team traveled aboard a Boeing 767-300ER operated by Aeronexus and branded as the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).As the plane prepared to take off, two airport fire trucks created a spectacular arc of water over the runway, allowing the plane to taxi over the salute.The ceremony is a long-standing aviation tradition often reserved for special occasions. The water salute is considered a symbolic blessing for the aircraft and its passengers, with many believing that it christens the journey and brings good luck.Brazil open their Group C campaign against Morocco on June 14 before facing Haiti on June 20. Their final match in the group stage will be against Scotland on June 25.Brazil, drawn in a group with Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, are widely expected to progress to the knockout stages but will be eager for a good start as they bid to win football’s biggest prize.The most successful country in World Cup history, Brazil have lifted the trophy five times – in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. They also have the unique distinction of being the only team to appear in every edition of the FIFA World Cup.
