The victory helped England to climb second in the WTC ranking with a percentage of points (PCT) 66.67. Sri Lanka is now third with the same PCT, but less is played. India, which launched the Lord’s test in second place, slipped to the fourth with PCT 33.33.

Both sides scored 387 in their first shifts, with standout efforts from Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Kl Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah. Indian pitch -ups put them in a position to win, but an English heart attack, led by Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes and Brydon Cart, supplied under pressure.
