Arrests of Trinamool Congress leaders continued on Tuesday (June 2, 2026), with former Kalna MLA Debo Prasad Bag and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councilor Sachin Singh being taken into custody in separate cases of alleged corruption and extortion.

Since the BJP came to power in West Bengal, nearly a hundred Trinamool Congress leaders, mostly grassroots workers, have been arrested on charges of corruption and post-election violence in connection with the 2021 assembly elections. According to the police, Mr. Bag was arrested after a huge amount of government relief materials were found in his home.

“An FIR was registered on Monday (June 1, 2026) following which a police team searched his residence. He initially refused to cooperate with the police as he did not even open the door,” said Amarjit Biswas, an officer at the Kalna police station.

“Police detained him late on Monday night and after detailed interrogation, he was arrested on Tuesday. Police also seized some government relief materials, food grains and some toys meant for public distribution from his residence,” the officer added.

“We are not sure yet why he stored such a huge amount of government materials in his house. We are investigating whether he planned to sell them or had some other plans,” the officer added. Police said locals also questioned his “luxurious lifestyle”.

Narkeldanga police arrested KMC councilor (Ward 36) Sachin Singh on charges of extortion, bribery and intimidation.

An officer from Narkeldanga police station said a group of people surrounded Mr. Singh’s residence on Tuesday morning and started promoting slogans against him. “The angry mob also pelted stones at his house and accused him of taking bribes, extorting money and assaulting and threatening local people over the years,” the officer said. The police dispersed the mob and later arrested Mr. Singh based on an FIR filed by some local residents.

Earlier, police also arrested Bishnupur MLA Dilip Mondal, Purbasthali North MLA Tapan Chattopadhyay, former Burdwan South MLA Khokon Das, former Chinsurah MLA Asit Mazumder and several Trinamool councilors, including Sudip Polley of KMC ward 123.

Meanwhile, former Katwa MLA Rabindranath Chattopadhyay was hospitalized on Tuesday after he was allegedly assaulted by BJP workers over allegations of misappropriation of relief materials.

“Mr. Chattopadhyay was rescued and admitted to the hospital. We have not received any FIR from any party so far and no arrests have been made,” said Jayanta Pal, Katwa police station officer.

The resignation continues

Meanwhile, there has been a steady stream of resignations from several Trinamool leaders in recent days. Even on Tuesday, Member Mayor-in-Council (MMIC) in KMC Tarak Singh resigned from his post citing “mental disorders” and lack of proper accountability.

Earlier, Mr Singh skipped a meeting called by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with KMC councilors and accused the party leadership of failing to protect workers who were allegedly facing attacks from BJP supporters. He also accused Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee of destroying the party and its image.
