Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has taken the main step towards inclusive public transport by launching “Dhwanispandana Yojane”, an initiative to help visually affected passengers with simpler and independent mobility.
Minister of Transport Ramaling Reddy launched an initiative on Monday at the Municipal Bus booth in Mysuru.
As part of this initiative, sound devices systems were installed on almost 200 buses operating on various routes in Mysuru. These devices can be activated by visually impaired users via a remote key that announces routes and other details, allowing passengers to identify their required buses separately.
Within the program, 400 visually impaired persons were trained for the use of these devices. During the market, several of them were provided to users to facilitate their easy and independent travel. A similar initiative has already been implemented in Bengaluru, where 125 buses were equipped with these facilities.
On this occasion, Mr. Reddy said that steps would be taken to ensure that these sound devices would be built in the new buses added to the existing KSRTC fleet in the future. He said the initiative was introduced to support visually questioned people in safe and confident choice and catering buses.
The project was launched in cooperation with Giz India as part of the Green Urban Mobility Partnership (Gump) Government and Germany Government. Giz India supports the Sumaca KSRTC project to improve urban mobility and transport services in Mysuru.
This initiative was developed by Raised Lines Foundation and IIT Delhi with the support of training from the Swami Vivekanand Youth Anif and All India Institute of Speech and Hearing.
The device contains three components: bus unit, distance and speaker. When the Visuall disturbed passenger presses the “Find” button on the remote control on the bus stand, scans buses within range and announces its details. After selecting a specific bus using the “Select” button, the information is transmitted to the bus unit that warns the driver and conductor that the visually affected passenger is about to enter. This ensures that the bus stops safely for a longer period of time, allowing passengers to be aboard separately without needing external help.
Mal and former Minister of Tanveer Sait, Karnataka State Warranty System for the Implementation Committee for Vice -Chairman Pushp AmarNath, Division Division (Urban Division), were elected representatives and officials on this occasion.
