The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (July 12, 2025) called on every Indian to visit the fortresses of the Maratha Military Landscape, which were included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List.
Among the “Maratha Military Landscapes” are 12 majestic forts, of which 11 are in the mahara and one is in Tamil Nadu.
“Speaking of the famous realm of marath, we associate it with the good administration of public affairs, military strength, cultural pride and emphasis on social care. Great rulers inspire us with their rejection of any injustice.
At the 47th meeting of the World Heritage Committee on Friday (July 11, 2025), the Indian official nomination for the 2024-25 cycle, “Maratha Military Landscape of India”, was written on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which became Indian 44.
According to an official statement by the Ministry of Culture of the Union of the Ministry of Culture, which extends from the 17th to the 19th century.
Selected places are spreading across the states of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, including Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, along with Gingee in Tamil Nadu.
The proposal was submitted to the World Heritage Committee for assessment in January 2024. After a strict 18 -month process, which included several technical meetings with advisory bodies and visiting ICOMOS to review places, the members of the World Heritage in UNESCO, Paris.
India also has 62 seats in the preliminary list of world heritage, which is a compulsory threshold for any place to be considered as the property of the world heritage in the future. Every year, each state party can propose only one place to assess the World Heritage Committee for the inscription on the World Heritage List.
