Kochi-Salem Gas Pipeline Project: Govt. called for a reassessment of the compensation for the acquired land
The Kochi-Salem LPG Pipeline Action Council has urged the government to reassess the compensation provided for land acquired for the Kochi-Salem Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) pipeline project.
In a letter to Chief Minister VD Satheesan, the council representatives alleged that they were denied fair compensation under the provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, known as the LARR Act. The land, which belongs to several farmers, was acquired by Kochi Salem Pipeline Private Limited following an order issued by the Department of Revenue dated 7 January 2019.
Saji Kudiyirippil, convener of the council, said the Center had amended the Petroleum and Mineral Management Act, 1962 in 2015. According to this regulation, compensation has to be determined under the LARR Act. However, he argued that landowners who gave up their land for the project were denied fair compensation under the law.
The council urged the government to revoke the order issued by the revenue department in 2019. It asked the authorities to reassess the compensation under the LARR Act. The council also sought the government’s intervention to review the compensation given for agricultural crops and trees under the land acquisition.
