Former Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) wrote letters to regional leaders, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, calling for a “Ladakh Single Contact with the Prime Minister (PM) and Home Minister (HM) to initiate a sustained dialogue with the people of JK”.
“The recent breakthroughs achieved by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) with the Center offer an important lesson: only dialogue can yield meaningful results. If we want to restore the dignity and security of our people, a constructive dialogue with the Government of India is a much-needed imperative. The time has come for us to initiate a united and sustainable dialogue with them with the PM to the prevailing people. J&K,” the letter by Ms. Muftis.

Ms. Mufti said that J&K is once again at the crossroads of its history where a pervasive sense of despair and disillusionment gripped the state. “To pull J&K out of the current debilitating slump requires a broad consensus above and across party and partisan lines,” Ms Mufti said.
She called on regional leaders to “keep disagreements and conflicting views on the back burner to unite for the common good and collective well-being”. “This cannot become a matter of taking political credit or scoring points. Rather, it must become a moment of unification in the best interests of the people we all claim to represent,” Ms Mufti said.
She appealed to CM Abdullah “to initiate the much-needed process of bringing all parties together through an official meeting” as the head of state.
“This will enable us to formally approach the central government. As disagreements and squabbles between regional parties are damaging the collective interests of J&K, a sensible consensus, especially after 2019, is the only solution. If Ladakh can do it, so can we,” Ms Mufti said.
In a letter to CM Abdullah, Ms Mufti stressed that “his support was a prerequisite for the success of this political platform”. “True unity in these difficult, unprecedented times can lead us to restore the rights and dignity of our people guaranteed by the Constitution of India,” Ms Mufti said.
Apart from CM Abdullah, the letter was also handed over to Opposition BJP Leader Sunil Sharma, J&K Pradesh Congress Committee President Tariq Hameed Karra, CPI(M) Leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, People’s Conference President Sajad Gani Lone, Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid, J&K Aam Aadmi Party President, People’s Party President Haad Mehraj Malik, Yaad Democrat Malik. J&K National Panthers Party President Harsh Dev Singh, Shiv Sena (J&K Unit) President Manish Sahni, Kashmir Pandit Sangharsh Samiti President Sanjay Tickoo and Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee President Jaspal Singh.
