South Africa Wiaan Mulder revealed that the legendary Western Indies Brian Lara encouraged him to go for 400, after Mulder declared 367 during the second test against Zimbabwe. Mulder, who the Captain of the side in the absence of regular management, decided to end the shifts of South Africa for lunch 2. The day-long 33 runs are ashamed of Lara’s World-Record 400, which is not against England in Antigua in 2004.
The Proteas continued to win a shift test and 236 runs, Mulder’s call, however, triggered a considerable discussion in the cricket world, and many asked why he did not try to break the individual record.
Talking with the supersport after Mulder’s victory revealed that he was talking to Lara after the game and that the West Indies icon expressed disappointment that he was not pushing a milestone. According to Mulder, Lara told him he should go to the record, and encouraged him to do so if such a chance reappears.
“Now that things have settled a little, I talked a little with Brian Lar … He told me I was creating my own heritage and I should have been for it. He said the records were broken there and he wanted to see if I ever go and scored more than he had,” Mulder Supersport said.
“That was an interesting view on his part, but I still believe that I did the right thing and respecting the game is the most important part for me,” he added.
Mulder had before explained that his decision was made of respect for Lara and his iconic success. He also said he had consulted with the head coach of South Africa Shukri Conrad before he declared shifts.
“At first I thought we had enough and we needed to mix. Second, Brian Lara is a legend. For someone in this character, he deserves this record. If I get a chance to do it again, I would do it in the same way,” Mulder said in the match after the match.
Lara’s 400 No remains the highest individual score in the history of test crickets and is widely considered one of the most unbreakable records in the game. Mulder’s statement ruled by discussions about records, inheritance and sports behavior.
Even the former opener of Western India Chris Gayle considered in this matter, expressing their disappointment. Gayle noted that Mulder missed a rare opportunity to write his name in cricket historical books by not doubting Larina’s legendary Mark.
