The Kerala government will provide land and houses to seven Scheduled Caste (SC) families facing eviction at Malayidomthuruth near Kizhakkambalam in Ernakulam, Chief Minister VDSatheesan told the assembly on Tuesday.
Responding to a challenge raised by Congress MLA VPSajeendran, he said the government was trying to resolve the issue involving the two private parties amicably.
“In the past, 14 attempts were made to evict these families on the basis of court orders. The 15th attempt was made a day after our government was sworn in. The government intervened to defuse the tension. Minister Roji M.John, who is in charge of Ernakulam district, chaired the meeting of the stakeholders. We got two extensions through the Advocate General on the orders of the Supreme Court. They agreed to the government’s proposal to provide houses and spare lands. We will not abandon these families,” said Mr. Satheesan.
He said the government would examine whether cases filed against the families in previous attempts to evict them could be withdrawn.
Real problem is police violence: CPI(M)
Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA KNBalagopal said “the real problem is the police violence” unleashed on the families during the attempted eviction.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala rejected the allegations, saying police did not take any action, apart from deploying a water cannon when one of the protesters attempted self-immolation. “When I came to know about the problem, I ordered the troops to withdraw immediately. The police did not take any violent action against the families,” he said.
Revenue Minister AP Anilkumar said attempts have been made to identify 40 cents of land to provide 5 cents each to eight families. However, no suitable land has yet been found in Vazhakkulam panchayat or Kunnathunadu taluk, he added.
The eviction in Malayidomthuruth was initiated following a Supreme Court verdict four years ago in favor of a private individual in a 2.65-acre land dispute said to fall within the 19.30-acre Puramboke land.
