For the first time in Tamil Nadu, electric buses with low floors were introduced in Chennai. The Chief Minister of MK Stalin identified 120 new electronic orders from the depot of the Pisarpads within Chennai’s pressure on cleaner, safer and more accessible public transport.
These low floors have 39 seat belts seats, wheelchair ramps, CCTV cameras, emergency alarms, mobile charging points and real -time LEDs. Each bus can travel up to 200 km in full charge, supported by new depot charging devices.
120 E-Busins cost nearly 208 GBP Crore and are financed within the partnership in Chennai City: Sustainable Municipal Service with World Bank and AIIB support. MTC aims to deploy by February 2026 625 electric buses with low floors.
The routes will include Broadway – Kilambakkam, Pernurbur – Manali and more. The project also emphasizes inclusivity, with 20 women between the bus crew. Although some groups for disability rights are welcome as a step to reduce air pollution, they have caused worries about disabled wheelchair space in a new design.
