According to a diplomatic cable reviewed by Reuters, an individual using a vote generated by AI, who pretended to be the US Foreign Minister, Governor of the US, Governor of the US and Congress member in June, contacted a vote.
The fraudulent range was made through the signal Messaging App, with the imitator left voicemail for at least two goals.
“The actor has probably focused on manipulating targeted individuals using text and voice messages generated by AI to access information or accounts,” the cable said.
Goals lured by a signal and text
The impersonator reached out in mid -June using a signal. In one case, a text message was sent that invited the recipient to continue the conversation via the application, reported. The cable warns that although no direct cyber threat to the Foreign Ministry has not been identified, sensitive information could be endangered if individuals were deceived by targeting.
“There is no direct cyber threat to separate from this campaign, but information shared with a third party could be exposed if the targeting individuals were at risk,” the cable warned.
Rubio, officials who are not directly involved
The diplomatic cable did not reveal the identity of foreign ministers or US officials contacted. The Foreign Ministry has initiated an investigation into this matter.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of this incident and is currently investigating the matter,” the head official told Reuters on the state of anonymity.
“The Ministry seriously takes its responsibility for the protection of its information and is constantly taking steps to improve posture of the department of the ministry to avoid future incidents,” the official added.
No perpetrator named
While the cable did not name the perpetrators, the former efforts in April related to a Russian cyber actor referred to an earlier effort in April. This campaign included phishing e -maily sent to Think tanks, Eastern European dissidents and former American officials. The attacker used fake e-mail addresses “@State.gov” and official branding from the Office for Diplomatic Technology of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The actor has shown an extensive knowledge of the convention of the name of the ministry and the internal documentation,” the cable noted.
According to industrial partners quoted by the state ministry, this phishing effort was attributed to a hacker associated with the Russian foreign intelligence service (SVR).
In May the FBI flag flag AI
In May, the FBI issued a public service announcement that warned that harmful actors were used by AI -generated voices and text messages to issue themselves as head of government officials. Objective: Get access to personal accounts or obtain information or resources.
The FBI refused to comment on the incident this week.
“Access to the goals could be used to set out for other government officials or their collaborators and contacts,” warned the announcement of May.
Cyber security concerns Mount
Last month, the cable follows a separate internal crisis, including a former National Safety Advisor Mike Waltz, who accidentally added journalists to a group chat where the details of the military strike on Yemen were shared.
Cable 3. July urged all diplomatic and consular posts to warn external partners of false accounts and personification.
