US President Donald Trump reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to start saving tariffs on imports from multiple countries since August 1, 2025. On Tuesday (July 8), Trump’s social media platform explained that it would not be delayed or exceptions.
“There was no change in this date and there will be no change,” Trump wrote. “In other words, all the money will be payable and due from August 1, 2025 – no extensions will be granted.”
Ongoing notifications of business partners
Trump said that formal letters have already been sent to different countries that warn them of the imminent tariffs with further following in the coming days.
“According to letters sent to different countries yesterday, except letters that will be sent today, tomorrow and for the next short period of time, tariffs will begin to be paid 1 August 2025,” the president said.
The statement comes after the White House postponed the re -assistance of tariffs until August 1 of July 9.
Trump Slaps 25-40% of the tariffs for imports from 14 countries, effective 1 August
US President Donald Trump on Monday (July 7) sent formal letters to 14 countries, including Japan and South Korea, which announced new tariffs ranging from 25 % to 40 % on import, effective 1 August. The transfer represents the renewed pressure to force new trade agreements before the previously stored date of July 9.
The letters quoted “significant trade deficits” and warned against fines for any retaliation of tariffs, he said that such steps would be compared “above the 25%”. However, the letters also left room for negotiation, and Trump said that the US would “perhaps consider adjusting” if business barriers were removed.
Trump offered these countries a chance to avoid tariffs if their companies build or produce products in the US.
And if these nations store retaliatory tariffs, the US would add this amount to the declared basic tariff. The goods transported to avoid tariffs will be subject to a higher rate.
US expands the tariff suspension to 1 August
The United States has extended the suspension of their mutual tariffs, originally announced on April 2 until August 1, and offered temporary relief to exporters and allowed more time for business negotiations.
The suspension, which was prepared for the expiration of July 9, was extended through the executive order issued by the White House. The order quoted “more information and recommendations from higher officials”, including updates on discussion progress with business partners as the basis for extension.
“With regard to this information, it is necessary to extend the suspension of the executive order 14266 to 12:01 EDT 1 August 2025,” said the White House.
April 2, President Trump announced reciprocal tariffs in several countries, including 26 % duty on Indian goods, but the implementation was suspended for 90 days to provide partners time to negotiate business agreements with the US.
