
The lightning flood in the Nepal river Bhotekoshi along its border with China swept the key bridge Miteri together with vehicles, which was parked in a dry port and killed one person, officials said on Tuesday.
The Bhotekoshi River forms the border between Nepal and China, and the dry port is located where the vehicles were run.
The floods were caused by severe precipitation on the Chinese side and caused extensive damage to the Timune infrastructure on the Nepalese side. The floods hit the area early in the morning on Tuesday
Many of the 200 vehicles maintained in the customs port near the river were swept by lightning floods induced by severe rainfall, Arjun Paudel, the main district director of Rasuwa, quoted.
“Many vehicles maintained in the customs port along the Bhotekoshi River were swept through a lightning flood after heavy rainfall on the Chinese side. At the time of the flood there were about 200 vehicles in the customs port,” he said.
People swept, one dead
One person was confirmed by dead and 17 other – 11 Nepalese and six Chinese – is mentioned as missing, according to the National Risk Reducing Authority and Disaster Management in Nepal.
The authorities previously also received HAT inputs, some people could be swept away with vehicles.
“The flood hit the area around 3:00 (local time). From now on, no human losses were confirmed, but we were given information that some people were also swept through the floods together with the vehicle in the morning who slept inside those parked along the dry port,” assistant to the main district officer Rasuwagadhi Prasad Prasad.
Police staff trapped
Officials also stated that 12 workers in Nepal were imprisoned in the flood area, while the authorities are in contact with the Nepal Army to perform search and rescue operations.
Many traders were also stuck, because the bridge, which connects Nepal and China, was also washed away because of the lightning flood.
“We are in contact with the Nepalese army to perform a search and rescue operation in this area, because we have information that 12 Nepal staff is also imprisoned in the locality.
The cause of the lightning flood is still subject to the investigation. The police suspect that severe collisions in the Tibetan region could have caused an increase, but the exact reason has not yet been confirmed.
After the incident, the local authorities advised residents living along the Trishhuli River to remain careful.
