They built a boasting around the “pursuit of 600” and intimidated visitors by putting them on feathers. The formula was simple: straighten the playground, back the dough and let the runs talk. It worked consistently, spectacular. Only last month they hunted 371 in Leeds without breaking sweat.
But Birmingham has released a rough awakening. The playground was flat-like England would like, but it was India that made it count. In two shifts, visitors have accumulated on more than 1000 runs and handed over England a monstrous target of the fourth shift 608. The challenge is too steep, even for the revolutionary of the test cricket.
The loss seems to shook England so much to cause a rare phenomenon: they began to complain about their own playground. For years, the English Party tour has grinded to turn the song on the subcontinent. This time it was Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum by lifting the eyebrows – evoking the surface of Edgbaston “subcontinental” and suggesting that India suits more than the host.
Interestingly, there were no such concerns in Leeds, where England chased 371 on a similar surface. When England was chasing 378 on the same Birmingham playground three years ago, there was no word. But as soon as they fell by 336 years in Birmingham at the beginning of this week, the playground was suddenly debate. Perhaps selective memory?
Gill’s well -timed nudging
On the other hand, SHUBMAN GILL, only two tests for his captain has already shown that the leader who is formed. Quiet, compact, folded. No theaters, no bravery. Only the unwavering belief in your team and the quiet authority that is difficult to miss. He helped India to erase the scars of Leeds and raise the flag in Birmingham and release one of their biggest overseas victories in style.
And while he doesn’t have to be one for verbal call Gill is not ashamed of a well -timed nuddle be. At a press conference after the matches danced along the metaphorical track and cut off in the middle of half:
“Abhi dechenge kaisa wicket dhe hai lord’s mein is again serving something this apartment).”
Of course with a grin. Quiet confidence, sharp timing-only as his launch from arrival in England.
Dilemma
With hardly any turn, England now faces dilemma: a green playground or a flat deck at Lord? Should they go with a living surface, such as the one that is used for the World Cup final between the South African Republic and Australia-or is holding a quiet species that suited their style in the recent past?
Let the numbers lead us.
During Captain Joe Root (2017-2022), England was an average of 29.03 with a bat at Lord, won five and lost two. Since Ben Stokes took over, the average climbed to 34.47.
Can England handle spices in London?
Chief coach Brendon McCullum sent a fine news to the curator when he said he would like “something with a little pace, a little more reflection and maybe a little side, hopefully” in the cricket house at the end of this week.
But the big question remains: Can England afford to introduce a spicy playground?
Whenever India has been offered green traces abroad, Jasprit Bumrah & Co. hosts overcame. Whether it is Johannesburg in 2018, Twin London Tests in 2021, or in Perth in 2023, Indian Pacers hunted blood on grassy decks.
When Bumrah returned to the third test and Akash deep seams in Dukes Ball even on a quiet playground in Birmingham, the Indian pace of attack looks in a fine shape. Mohammed Siraj is resurrected by his six-za in Leeds. And if necessary, Arshdeep Singh has a reserve to strengthen the battery. Tourists almost certainly do not mind the surface with healthy covering of grass.
Indian batting unit also with confidence. Without luggage of the past, this young core guided Gill has already scored almost 2000 runs in two tests. Like Kl Rahul and Rishabh Pant, they bring another experience of being in harder English conditions.
Meanwhile, England heads to London with increasing doubts about their bowling unit. Chris Woakes, designated by the Post-Anderson era, has so far looked common. Josh’s language and Brydon Cars did not issue what England hoped that the conditions did not help them after the righteousness.
Yes, England added Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson to their group for the Lord’s test. But the question marks hang over their condition: Archer has not slipped in the test since 2021 and has since played only one first -class match. Atkinson, known for his pace, also comes from the release of injuries.
Even more importantly, they trust their one -dimensional pasty from Boveball to crush it if the conditions are more complicated?
England is in the place of harassment. On the live broadcast, the former Indian stimulator Varun Aaron could not resist Jonathan Trott’s cheeky digging, if England was thinking about bringing James Anderson, still swinging him as a wizard in the regional cricket, a year after retirement.
Put a flat playground and Gill waits. Serve green and Bumhrah licks his lips.
You wouldn’t want to be Stokes or McCullum this week.
The Lord’s test could well define the direction that this series deals with. England must correct the playground. But there is also a deeper dilemma: because there may no longer be such a thing against this Indian party as a “real” playground.
