On Monday (July 7), the Brazilian government intervened after US President Donald Trump issued a statement criticizing the prosecution of Jaira Bolsonar, a former Brazilian president, who is in court for alleged planning to overturn 2022.
Gleisi Hoffmann, the head of the ruling party of workers and the Brazilian Minister for Institutional Relations, accused Trump of the effort to interfere in the trial of the country.
Trump calls Bolsonaro the prosecution of “Witch Hunting”
In a post on the Social Truth, Trump claimed that Bolsonaro was innocent and compared his legal difficulties with his own in the US.
“Brazil is doing a terrible thing in dealing with former President Jair Bolsonar,” Trump wrote. “I watched, just like the world, because they did nothing but came to him, day after day, night per night, month after a month, year after year! There is nothing guilty, except that he fought for people.”
Trump continued to warn that “Big people from Brazil will not be worth what they are doing to their former president,” he added: “I will be very carefully observed by the witch hunt of Jaira Bolsonar, his family and thousands of his supporters.”
In his message, Trump also claimed that Bolsonaro’s elections were “very close and now leads in public opinion surveys”.
“The only court to happen is the Brazil voters’ court – it is called the election,” Trump said. “Leave Bolsonaro alone!”
The Brazilian Minister answers: “Respect our sovereignty”
Gleisi Hoffmann sharply answered Trump’s remarks and said Brazil would not tolerate foreign interventions.
“Trump is wrong if he thinks he can interfere with the Brazilian trial,” Hoffmann said in his statement.
She also proposed that Trump should focus on his own legal issues.
“Trump should focus on its own problems, which are a lot and respect Brazilian sovereignty and our judicial system,” she added.
Bolsonaro faces fees for land
Bolsonaro is currently in court at the Supreme Court in Brazil. The prosecutors say that he and his older helpers have been conspired to prevent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from entering the office in January 2023.
The accusation stems from a two -year investigation of the election procedure that culminated in Bolson’s unrest in Bolsonaro one week after Lula inauguration.
Last month Bolsonaro denied the lead of the coup attempt, but recognized the discussion on scenarios to block Lula’s Presidency.
Bolsonaro testified that they had discussed alternatives, including the possibility of deploying military forces and suspending some civil freedoms, but these proposals were soon dropped.
