How common is killing in love?
The report of the National Office for Crime records (NCRB) revealed that love affairs were the third largest triggers of the murders held in India in 2022.
According to data published in 2022, up to 1,401 cases of murder with “love affairs” were reported throughout India as a motive and 1,420 murdered “unlawful relationship” – a total of 2,821 cases – a total of 2,821 cases -.
This represented almost 8 % of the total cases of murder reported throughout the country this year.
These cases may include marriage incidents that have gone wrong, romantic rivalry, or suspicion of a love affair, including romance -related emotions.

This number increased to 3 125 in 2021. Of the 29,272 murders in 2021, “love affairs” were 1,566 cases and 1559 cases had “illicit relations” behind them.
In particular, the share of killing related to love in the total data of the murder in India was recorded in 2010–2014 to seven eight percent. Between 2016 and 2020, however, it increased to 10-11 %, when the total number of murders showed a declining trend.
