Mexico required their record 10. The Concacaf Gold Cup title with a hard 2-1 victory over the United States in the pulsating final at the Houston Stadium NRG on Sunday.
In a match that is struggling with intensity and emotions, Mexico had to come from behind after admitting Mauricio Pocttino soon. Chris Richards gave the hosts a dream in the fourth minute and climbed the highest to meet a free kick by Sebastian Berhalter. His turbulent head bounced the underside of the partition and through the line – a confirmed referee – to give the Americans an early lead.
But Mexico responded in style. Raul Joenez equalized the score in the 27th minute by a sharp, instinctive ending into the network roof after a clever opposite passage from Marcel Ruiz. Fulham attacker described the goal of a poignant tribute to his former teammate Wolverhampton Wanderers Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a traffic accident on Thursday. Jimenez picked up a Mexican jersey that was called Jota the name and number when he really sat on the pitch.
The equalizer served Mexico, which dominated the great spells of the match. Roberto Alvarado and 16 -year -old Gilberto Mora forced strong savings from American goalkeeper Matt Freese, while the Americans remained dangerous on the counter, while Malik Tillman and Berhalter cleverly combined in the middle of the field.
Edson Lvarez eventually found that the breakthrough Mexico was pushing. In the 77th minute West Ham United Defender was driven into a diving head and built Mexico 2-1 forward. Initially, he ruled out for offside, the goal was awarded after the review was shown that Lvarez had timed his run perfectly – triggered wild celebrations between the Mexican contingent.
“I’m not talking,” Lvarez said after the match. “We spent 35 days in intense training, far from our families, with the intention of winning. There is certainly room for improvement, but we leave happy as legs firmly on the ground.”
There was a late drama when the US was pushing an equalizer. Replace Patrick Agyemang had a gold chance in the dying minutes, but his efforts were agonically wide and allowed Mexico to hold firmly and lift the trophy again.
The Mexican victory ensures the titles of the Back -To -back Cup and further cement their dominance in the region and joins the three championships of the Concacaf nations – the predecessor of the tournament – already in their cabinet.
“We came from behind and leave with the title,” Jimenez said. “It is great and really important to secure the crown summer in front of the World Cup. It’s something we have tried to do from the beginning of the tournament.”
The edition of the Golden Cup 2025 was 16 teams, including the visiting nation of Saudi Arabia. All matches were presented in the United States, except for one that took place in Vancouver, Canada.
