New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reaffirmed India’s commitment to advance in global southern priorities, deepen strategic ties and promote greater cooperation within the BRICS Group.
Sitharaman has led bilateral discussions with its Brazilian and Russian counterparts on second -hand ministers BRICS and Central Bank Governors in Rio de Janeiro, and the Ministry of Finance said on Sunday X.
At her meeting with Fernando Haddad, the Minister of Finance in Brazil, Sitharaman “approved the Brazilian leadership during his chairman BRICS and repeated the support of India for the enlargement and efforts of the group to the multipolar global order”.
“Both leaders discussed issues of mutual interest, including cooperation in the south and south, amplifying the voice of the global south, #COP30 and climate financing and involvement in regional and global forums such as the UN, G20, BRICS, WTO (World Trade Organization) and IBSA (India, Brazil and South Africa).
India supports the agenda and priorities set by the Brazil and hopes to transfer the results to the results when India takes over the chairman in January 2026, said the Minister of Finance for X.
India and Brazil, as strategic partners, share warm and heartfelt ties involving more sectors and closely working together to further strengthen the strategic partnership, Sitharaman said.
Sitharaman also met Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov.
Both leaders discussed a long -term partnership in India, Russia, and Sitharman also expressed gratitude for their support for the extended Russian President Vladimir Putin after the terrorist attack of Pahalgam, the Ministry of Finance said.
“The Minister of Finance of the Union noted that India and Russia have an exemplary level of mutual trust and understanding, and our special and privileged strategic partnership remains resistant and persistent,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sitharaman also congratulated Russia for the successful BRICS chairman in 2024. India will continue to use the BRICS platform to build South South cooperation in areas of common interest, she said.
“Both parties also discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, including cooperation in the financial sector, along with matters related to NDB,” the Ministry of Finance said.
NDB, formerly BRICS Development Bank, was founded in 2014 by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to mobilize infrastructure and sustainable development projects.
Based in Shanghai serves as a trusted alternative to Western institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
