The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra has seized 5,929 kg of methanol from Bhiwandi-based Rex International, officials said on Monday (Jun 1, 2026). The chemical was supplied to smugglers who allegedly made the liquor that killed 16 people in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

According to an FDA officer, a police investigation revealed that the chemical used in the fake liquor came from Rex International. The company operates from Vashi and has a warehouse in Bhiwandi.

Drug inspector Yogendra Pol raided the warehouse on Saturday and officials seized 5929 kg of methanol. The company did not make records of the purchase and sale of the substance. Officials also found that stock registers were not being maintained. The FDA seized the entire stock to prevent further abuse.

Mr. Pol said, “Company owner Arun Kumar Chaube and authorized signatory Abhishek Arun Kumar Chaube were not present during the raid. A complaint was lodged at Narpoli police station in Bhiwandi. A case was registered against them. FDA has initiated proceedings to revoke the company’s license under the Poisons Act.”

FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said, “Safe food and medicine is a fundamental right of every citizen. We will take legal action against those who violate the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and other laws.” He said the FDA will take action against any person or facility involved in activities related to drugs, chemicals and food products that are not authorized by law.
