Communication of July 1 from the Supreme Court, seen HT, to the Ministry of Housing and City Affairs (I can), demands that bungalow no.
“I have to ask you to take Bungalow holding No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, from Hon’ble Dr. Justice Dy Chandrachud without further delay, because the permit that was granted to maintain … May 31 2025, but also the time set in the 2022 rules. secretary. HT saw this letter.

Justice Chandrachud, which acted as 50. CJI from November 2022 to November 2024, currently occupies type VIII bungalows almost eight months after the dismantling of the office. The two following CJI – Justices Sanjiv Khanna and the reigning Bhushan R Gavai – decided not to move to the premises and instead decided to continue their lives in their previously assigned bungalows.
When Judge Chandrachud was credited, he attributed the delay to the belief of personal circumstances that the Supreme Court administration was fully informed. He explained that the government had already been assigned to alternative accommodation for a limited period of time and waited for a living after years of abuse.
According to road 1 July, 18 December 2024 – just after a month after retiring, the justice Chandrachud wrote the then CJI Khanna and sought permission to continue the residence at 5 Krishna Menon Marg in April 30, 2025.

In his letter, Judge Chandrachud stated that although bungalow no.
“It would be more comfortable if I was allowed to keep the existing accommodation in 5 Krishna Menon Marg until April 30, 2025,” wrote Chandrachud, offering to give up the Tuglak Road bungalow to assign another judge.
Rule 3b rules 2022 allows the main retirement judge to maintain accommodation type VII, which is a notch under Krishna Menon Marg Bungalow (type VIII), maximum six months after the pension.
After the CJI nodded I could approve the preservation of Bungalo type VIII in Krishna Menon Marg from justice Chandrachud from 11 December 2024 to 30 April 2025 on payment of the license fees £5 430 per month. This was handed over to the Supreme Court by letter of 13 February 2025.
The letter of 1 July added that Judge Chandrachud subsequently filed an oral request to continue his stay in the same premises until 31 May 2025, which was granted reservations – no further extension would be allowed because other judges, promoted, promoted, lived, lived in guests or waiting for bungalow.

Letter 1 July further emphasizes the breach of the timeline of the permit and the statutory framework. He notes that Rule 3b is entitled to retire judge only for type VII residence for six months, which is the period that ended for the justice of Chandrachud 10 May 2025.
Communication also explained that while the Krishna Menon Marg residence was allowed due to “special circumstances”, it was understood that after the agreed expansion to the end until the end of May, it would be released. Given that this deadline has failed, the administration will now make the ministry “take over without further delay” and confirm to the Supreme Court.
The letter represents a rare case of the formal intervention of the top court to regain its highest official residence from the former passenger, also the former CJI. While the informal extension and period of postponement after retirement are not unusual in the judiciary or bureaucracy, there is an unheard of a letter looking for an urgent action.
Justice Chandrachud said, “I have already assigned accommodation for rent and this house is currently under reconstruction because it has been closed in the last at least two years. I informed the Supreme Court about this assignment, which explains that I move the next day that the house is ready,” he added.

Justice Chandrachud also shared that the delay was partly due to the needs of his family, especially his two daughters, both of whom require special care. “I have two daughters with special needs, so it took me some time to look for a house suitable for their needs,” he said.
“My daughters have serious co -morbidity and genetic problems – especially non -small myopathy, for which AIIMS specialists are treated. I fully understand that this is my personal matter. I should also explain why it took me to look for a house for so long, and that is something I have already discussed with judges and officers.”
The former CJI claimed that this problem would soon be resolved and that he remained fully aware of the obligations that came up with his last office.
“It is only a few days and I move … I have secured the Supreme Court and I am completely aware of my duties. Certainly, the former CJI has been allowed for prolonged time to keep government accommodation after retirement, often facilitate transition or personal prison,” Chandachud justice.
The former CJI also quoted letter 28 April, written by the then CJI, justice Khanna, who informed him that in the process of narrower selection of accommodation, due to the special needs of his daughters were looking for an extension until June 30.
