Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a special honor in Argentina on Saturday – “Key to Buenos Aires”.
Jorge Macri, the main official of the city, gave him this symbolic gift during his two -day visit. The key represents friendship and trust. Previously, PM Modi met President Javier Milei for important conversations.
This visit was historical because it was the first time in 57 years when the Indian Prime Minister came to Argentina only for bilateral interviews (not at a big conference). Hundreds of Indian immigrants encouraged PM Modi outside his hotel, waved flags and danced for Indian music.
The Prime Minister collects the second main international prize for a 500th tour
The Argentina’s Modi stop was part of a larger tour of five regions where it was collected by the main awards.
Previously, in Trinidad and Tobag, he got the “Order of the Republic”, their highest civilian honor.
He is the first foreign leader to have ever received. During this visit, both countries signed six more cooperation agreements. PM Modi thanked Trinidad for honoring him, and said the price was not only for him, but for all 1.4 billion Indians.
After Argentina, he joins the BRICS summit in Brazil and then visits Namibia. PM Modi and President Milei agreed to strengthen cooperation in important areas during their conversations. Argentina will supply lithium (key mineral for electric batteries) and slate gas to India.
This helps Indian energy security plans. Argentina has the second largest slate gases reserves in the world. PM Modi also asked for easier entry of available Indian drugs into Argentina. The leaders agreed to expand partnership of defense and trading between countries. PM Modi even invited Milei to visit India soon, especially to see Gujarat’s Lion Sanctares!
In addition to formal meetings, PM Modi paid respect in important cultural places. He visited the San Martin Memorial and honored the Argentine National Hero, who helped to liberate South America from the colonial government.
The visit also strengthened people’s ties to the people-PM Modi showed President Milei how India uses drones in agriculture (“Drone Didi” initiative). Before leaving PM Modi, he described the way as “productive” and said that India-Argentina’s relationship had a “promise” before us.
