(PTI photo) NEW DELHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday suspended Cricket Canada’s membership of the ICC with immediate effect following a board meeting in Ahmedabad, citing serious breach of membership obligations.“The ICC Committee has decided to suspend Cricket Canada’s membership of the ICC with immediate effect due to a serious breach of its membership obligations,” the ICC said in a statement. The move comes months after the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation aired a documentary in April alleging corruption in Cricket Canada’s administration. The program has raised concerns over governance issues, including allegations of match-fixing and threats of violence involving some players and officials.Despite the suspension, the ICC said it has taken steps to ensure Canadian cricketers are not affected by administrative issues within the national body. Canadian national teams will continue to be eligible to participate in ICC events during the suspension period.“In making this decision, the ICC Board was mindful of the importance of protecting the interests of Canadian players and ensuring that governance issues affecting the national governing body are not disadvantaged. Accordingly, Canada’s representative teams will continue to be eligible to participate in ICC events during the suspension period.”The ICC also said Cricket Canada will continue to receive financial support, but only through a managed funding mechanism overseen by ICC management. Funds may only be used for approved national team programs. The governing body will provide Cricket Canada with a set of conditions that must be met before membership can be renewed. The process will be monitored by the ICC Standardization Committee along with ICC management.“The ICC will also provide Cricket Canada with a set of conditions for reinstatement which will be aimed at addressing the governance and administration issues identified by the Board. Progress in meeting these conditions will be monitored by the ICC Standards Committee with the support of ICC management, with reinstatement conditional on the Board being satisfied that the conditions have been fully met,” the ICC statement said. The ICC Council also endorsed a number of recommendations of the Committee of Directors General.Among them is a trial to allow the pink ball to be used in Test matches, with the agreement of both teams, to reduce the number of games lost due to bad light. The ICC will also work with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) to research lighting technology that could help umpires and match venues better deal with poor lighting conditions. In another change, match officials will be allowed access to Hawk-Eye data when assessing and reporting suspected illegal bowling action. The board also approved updates to the game conditions. Head coaches or their designated representatives will now be able to consult with players during scheduled drink breaks. A mandatory 15-minute interval will be introduced in T20 Internationals, while batsmen will have to be ready when play resumes after the break.
