The proposed six-lane controlled access greenfield expressway between Bengaluru and Vijayawada is expected to give a major boost to Kadapa district and its industrial growth.

The route starts from Kodur village near Kodikonda check post, passes through five districts of Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, SPSR Nellore, Prakasam and Bapatla and ends at Muppavaram village near Addanki.

This highway provides a much-needed link between the two national highways, NH-44 (Bengaluru-Hyderabad) and NH-16 (Chennai-Vijayawada), which extend inland between them.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken over NH-544G, part of the Bengaluru-Kadapa-Vijayawada Economic Corridor, for a total length of 343.24 km 343.24 km of the greenfield section of NH-544G.

The proposed corridor will reduce the travel distance between Bengaluru and Vijayawada by 110 km and reduce travel time by three to four hours.

Kadapa district is getting maximum benefit from the project which passes through 12 mandals of Pulivendula, Vemula, Vempalli, VN Palli, Yerraguntla, Kamalapuram, Chapadu, Mydukuru, B. Matham, B. Kodur and Porumamilla for a length of 123.5 km.

“This includes six construction packages with a total project cost of ₹5,377.72 crore,” Kadapa District Collector Sridhar Cherukuri said. Land acquisition for the project is at an advanced stage and 2,750 hectares have been acquired (including 1,020 ha in Kadapa district itself).

Permissions obtained

The project is divided into 14 packages and construction is underway. In March 2025, statutory permits such as forest and wildlife clearance II were obtained.

“With this well-thought-out project, Bengaluru and Vijayawada will now get direct access to the industrial hubs of Hindupuram and Kopparthi (Kadapa),” said R. Srinivasa Reddy, former TDP politburo member from Kadapa district, who was recently appointed zonal coordinator of the Hindupuram and Ananthapuram constituencies.

The entire corridor will be equipped with an Advanced Traffic Management System and a closed toll system, where vehicles will be charged only for the section used.

Kadapa will have seven of the 17 interchanges for entering and exiting the expressway and four of the 18 interchange facilities, including toilets, restaurants, petrol stations and parking for trucks and trailers.
