RCB’s Tim David suspended for IPL 2027 opener after throwing ice pack towards umpire
Tim David will miss Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2027 opener after being suspended for one match for throwing an ice bag towards umpire Nitin Menon during the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The IPL announced on Monday that David was fined 50 percent of his match fee and awarded two points for a Level 1 offence. The Australian was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with throwing the ball or any other cricket equipment at a player, team official, umpire, umpire or any other person in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during a match.
The incident happened in the 10th over of the first inning. According to IPL, David reacted to the fall of the wicket by aggressively throwing an ice bag towards umpire Nitin Menon.
David pleaded guilty and accepted the punishment imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.
Although the immediate penalty was a fine and two points, the breach carried greater consequences as it was David’s third Level 1 offense of the season. He previously had one minus point in game 20 and another two in game 54.
The latest offense cost him five points for the season, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under the IPL’s disciplinary rules.
As a result, David will miss the first match of IPL 2027 by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. If he represents another franchise next season, he will be served the suspension during that team’s opening game.
The punishment comes at the end of a successful campaign for both David and RCB, who ended the season defeated Gujarat Titans in the final. However, the title celebrations were tempered by disciplinary action against one of the team’s key batsmen, with David expected to start next season on the sidelines.
