The National Green Tribunal (NGT) recommended steps to prevent future fishing along the industrial section of Periyar Eloor -edayar by asking the authorities to ensure better river flow, strict regulation of industrial waste and control over all forms of pollution from industrial sources.
The South Tribunal bench, in the order of July 2, 2025, ordered the Ceral Pollution Council (PCB) to present various agencies investigating mass killing of fish in industrial section 20 May 2024, before Kerala High Court. Applications for the ongoing written petition in the application for the registration of the petition in the entry in the application for the registration of a petition concerning a permanent solution in the section.
The Tribunal took Suo Motu knowledge of the incident on the basis of a report entitled “Other Mass Fish in the Periyar River in Kerala after suspicion of wastewater release,” he published in Hind on May 21, 2024.
The tribunal, while destroying applications looking for measures against pollution in periyar, noted that fish killing was primarily due to a combination of sudden changes in water flow and industrial pollution.
It is generally argued that the opening of palam regulators leads to low oxygen levels and organic matter accumulation. The order quoted by the reports of Keral University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies and PCBs said the order that the primary statement was that the sudden release of water through the closures caused a rapid increase in the flow when the river has already carried heavy loads of organic substances and pollutants.
The ELOOR -Dayar industrial belt has also released waste into the river, which significantly contributes to the overall pollution load, including increased ammonia levels, hydrogen sulphide and other chemicals unbearable in fish. The Order stated that in 2024 in Periyar, recurring incidents of mass fish occurred, often associated with the opening of regulatory closures and the resulting deterioration of water quality.
