In a significant step, the State Commission for Human Rights (SHRC) ordered the Government of Karnataka to organize a comprehensive survey of the ninadaza in the Carnation to find out their exact number in the state in the next four months.
Earlier surveys
While earlier surveys in 1993-1994 and 2007-2008 inserted the number of ninth in Karnataka at 22,873 and 46,660 respectively, the Commission noted that the exact number of ninths in the state was needed to issue the necessary recommendations and completely take steps to eradic the system.
In its order of 23 June, the Commission stated that the survey must conduct a department for the development of women and children to identify the number of ninth and present the district report within 24 October 2025.
“The survey should also count their family members. Committees for exploration at the level of districts and state levels should be represented by ninadasis and their families,” said RV Chandrashekar, research worker at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU).
Families are not covered
He said that the previous two surveys had not covered families and also missed a large number of ninadas. “The first survey was considered only those born 10 years before 1982 and the second survey was considering those born before 1982. In this survey, the condition of the age limit should not be. He was the petitioner before the Shrc, who also took over the problem of ninadasi Suo-Motu.
The ninadasi system in Karnataka was historically prevailing, in which women were devoted to temples mostly as musicians and dancers, but over time it was exploitable. Former Maharajas from Mysore was one of the first for banning this practice in 1907-1908, and the government banned it in 1982 through Karnataka ninadasis (ban on dedication), 1982. Currently, it is located in 14 districts of Karnataka and Kalyan Karnataka and treasures and faces.
According to Mr. Chandrashekar, the effort to encourage Nin -Asis should not have partial access. “One -time comprehensive rehabilitation has the potential to completely eliminate evil,” he said. He said that their study showed that about 24,284 ninadasi women were given advantages between 1990 and 2024. “Of the total number of 46,600 ninadasis identified in a 2007 survey, 22 376 Ninadasis did not receive any relief. There is no information about those who have died.”
