Whistle, poda: Ishan Kishan’s message to CSK fans in Chepauk has gone viral

An emotional Ishan Kishan addressed the Chennai Super Kings crowd at Chepauk after SunRisers Hyderabad defeated CSK to qualify for the play-offs in the Indian Premier League 2026 season on Monday, May 18.

After SRH sealed a five-wicket win with six balls to spare, Kishan walked towards the stands and gestured, blowing his whistle before heading back to the dressing room, pointing towards the crowd.

The gesture appeared to be a response to the Chepauk crowd’s constant jeers during his innings. Chasing 181 runs on a tricky black clay surface in Chennai, SRH had to contend not only with the conditions but also with the deafening support of CSK throughout the chase.

However, Kishan held his nerve superbly.

The left-hander anchored the innings with a brilliant 70 off 47 balls and played a huge role in guiding Hyderabad to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. His innings helped stabilize the chase during the difficult phases and ensured that SRH remained in control despite several wickets falling around him.

After an opening spin strike, while Heinrich Klaasen aggressively attacked the CSK bowlers, Kishan shifted gears after Klaasen’s dismissal in the 15th over and took the game away from Chennai in the final stages of the chase.

His knock eventually eased things up for the uncapped batsmen Salil Arora and Smaran Ravichandran who calmly completed the game in the 19th over.

What made the shift even more impressive was the context behind it.

SRH struggled badly on black-earth surfaces earlier in the season, especially when they were bowled out for just 86 runs against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. However, this time Kishan adjusted beautifully to the pace of the wicket and resisted the temptation to drop his wicket despite the pressure created by the crowd and the match situation.

ISHAN KISHAN DEDICATES A SHIFT TO HIS SISTER

In his post-match speech, Kishan revealed the emotional motivation behind his innings and dedicated the win to his cousin and family, who had earlier gone through a personal tragedy during the T20 World Cup 2026.

“Sometimes I feel it’s about motivation and for me my motivation today was my cousin who is standing there. He lost his sister. It was a difficult time in the family. They are watching the game for the first time, so I wanted to finish the game for them,” Kishan said after the game.

“I’m glad they were there to witness this innings and I could finish this game. I was blessed from above. I had this feeling of strength. If we qualify, he will be happy,” he added.

Kishan’s celebration at the end perhaps revealed more than just the adrenaline rush of a high-pressure win.

Professional athletes are often judged only by what they produce on the field, but moments like these offer insight into the emotional weight they carry when performing at the highest level. Even as thousands inside Chepauk taunted him during the chase, Kishan had to drown out the noise, process the personal grief in his family and still deliver one of the most important innings of SRH’s season.

This is the harsh reality of elite sport. Players are expected to absorb real-time pressure, criticism and emotion while still making split-second decisions under immense control.

On Monday night in Chennai, Kishan did just that. Beneath the gestures towards the crowd and the visible aggression towards the end of the game was a cricketer carrying personal pain but still finding a way to get the job done when his team needed him most.
