The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) issued the Uttar Pradesh government announcement of the reported deaths of three prisoners filed in Varanasi prison.
According to the initial reports, there were deaths on 15 and 16 June 2025. The deceased includes two prisoners and one prisoner who allegedly died due to illness and complications related to the heart.
The Commission notes that the incident raises serious concerns about violating human rights in custody, issued the announcement to the CEO of the Prison and the Police Commissioner Varanasi and called for a detailed report within two weeks.
This report is expected to include the findings of investigation and postmortal test, initial records of the health of all three deceased prisoners and the relevant Master’s investigation reports, NHRC said.
