Main Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) remembered Loknayak Jayaprakash and the Emergency Movement and claimed that along with many of his colleagues actively against what he described as a dictatorship period.
“All our colleagues were imprisoned for increasing our votes against dictatorship. However, people of the country showed unity and courage. We fought the battle together. You all know that the voice of people lies at the core of democracy,” Kumar said in a social media.
He also added: “It is our responsibility to protect her in every situation. Bihar has always made the spirit of the Constitution, Justice, Freedom and Social Justice on the way of its development. Let our determination be that we will always remain vigilant and ready to protect the ideals of the Constitution.”
The representative of the main minister and leader of the party Bharatiya Janat (BJP) Samrat Choudhary repeated similar sentiments in the program organized by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Youth Affairs in Patna and called the 50th anniversary of the emergency.
Mr. Choudhary said that the youth must know, “who killed democracy” and described the period where the fundamental rights were “pulled”. The event was called Samvidhan Hytya Diwas – 2025.
“The Constitution Dr. Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar was murdered after 25 years of its implementation. The emergency situation was deposited by the ecstoice of the fundamental rights of people,” he said.
He also claimed that the country and the state emerged from this dark phase and are now developing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the main Minister Nitish Kumar. “India has become the fourth largest economy in the world and democracy flourishes,” he said.
Mr. Choudhara also remembered that young Nitish Kumar was imprisoned as an activist of the JP movement that was held in Buxar and Hazaribagath in an emergency.
Meanwhile, the leader of BJP and former Minister of Trade Union Anurag Singh Thakur, who addresses students in the “false parliament” held at the Homeopathic Faculty of RDK in Motihari, criticized the congress for storing an emergency.
“Exactly 50 years ago, the repressive Congress policy, his lust to power and his dictatorial thinking, gave an indelible spot on Indian democracy by storing an emergency,” said Hamirpur.
He argued that the Lakhs of the innocent people were imprisoned overnight because of “the ego of the family and an individual who was placed above the country’s interest”.
Mr. Thakur further said that while President Rashtriya Janata gave (RJD) Lalu Prasad Yadav emerged from the JP movement, later with the congress compromised to “save the chair”.
“Laluji’s socialism is based on the establishment of corruption, neotism and dynasty. People of Bihar will never forgive Lalu Prasad and his clan, who dream of usurping power in Bihar,” he added.
