Five people drowned in Tungabhadra river in Kurnool district

The bodies of all the five persons who drowned in the Tungabhadra river near Mantralayam on Saturday night were recovered by rescuers on Sunday. During the search, the rescuers also recovered the body of an unknown person.

The five deceased hailing from Anantapur and Kurnool districts and Hyderabad in neighboring Telangana had come to Mantralayam to attend a family celebration. After participating in a religious ritual, they entered the waters of the river along with others.

Tragedy struck when six members were swept away by currents as they entered deep into the river after allegedly misjudging the depth of the water. While five people drowned, Aparna of Adoni managed to get out of the waters.

Rescue teams, assisted by experienced swimmers and local fishermen, searched for the victims throughout the night and managed to locate them by Sunday afternoon. The deceased have been identified as Satish (35) and his five-year-old son Yuvan Chandra from Hyderabad, Raghavendra (25) and Dhanu (23) from Mantralayam and Sandhya (22) from Uravakonda in Anantapur district. Police said the bodies were recovered from different places downstream and handed over to the family members after formalities.

Meanwhile, rescuers recovered the body of an unknown person aged around 70 during the search operation. Police are trying to identify the person.
