Despite the growing need of cancer awareness and timely detection, free screening camps from cancer established in Tiruch medical centers caused a lukewarm response to the population.
Camps, focused on screening people aged over 18 years on oral cancer and women aged 30 years old for breast cancer and cervical cancer and provide appropriate treatment for recovery, the camps have to raise the pace, even though on May 12.
According to M. Vijay Chandran, a city medical officer, several factors contribute to low participation. “The lack of awareness of preventive cancer screening and its benefits is the main discouraging means. I hesitate to find many people to be afraid of diagnosis and social stigma associated with cancer.”
Screening camps are established in all 18 city primary medical centers and 36 medical and wellness centers in the city. Each center has a doctor, four employees’ sisters, six city nurses and women’s health volunteers. Training was conducted for doctors and medical staff. City nurses and women’s health volunteers are involved in the door awareness campaign to sensitize people and invite them to the screening.
With the data recorded in family registration, which contains complete data on persons in the family, their age and other information, they address people and give invitations. They are asked to bring filled cards at the time of screening.
As of June 21st, about 14 125 invitations were issued, 6,270 people were checked in the centers. Among the screening, 111 were transferred to hospitals for diagnostics, but only seven went to monitor.
“Biopsy for cervical cancer has been performed in seven patients and there are no confirmed cases of cancer. Subsequent checks whether patients visited the recommended screening facility is planned,” Chandran.
Steps have been taken to intensify the campaign to raise awareness and register of people in the scheme of comprehensive health insurance by the main minister. The team was instructed to check patients registered on UPHC, recipients of the Makkalai Thedi Marutuvam system and officials and corporation staff.
In the government hospital Mahatma Gandhi Commemorative Hospital, special counter -cancer screening for trouble -free treatment were established.
