The Coonoor Consumer Protection Association suggested that the government chose a place for the soon established government and science university in Coonoor, which can be accessible to students from distant areas and students from nearby Kundha Taluk.
In his letter to the Chief Minister S. Manogaran, President of the Association, he said he read reports on surveys conducted for the proposed government art university in Coonoor.
“If the college is established around the Coonoor area, it would be difficult for students – especially boys and girls from the areas of tea plantations, rural areas and tribal settlements in Coonoor Taluk – to commute to college every day,” Mr. Manogaran said.
He added that Coonoor already had an old, established college where he had already studied a thousand students. “Therefore, if a new university is set up at one of the following places in the Coonoor Legislative Comstituration, it would be very beneficial to students from rural parts of Coonooor and Kundah Taluk,” he said, calling for the use of the campus of higher secondary schools in Manjacombai or Melur Hosatty.
He also suggested to set up a college in areas like Selas, Athigrathts and Melur Kaikatts, which are also easily accessible to students from Coonoor, Kundha and even Udhagamandalam Taluks. Manogaran added that they believe that the university established in these places would bring the inhabitants of the Nilgiris constituency the greatest advantage.
