Liverpool sacked Arne Slota just a year after winning the Premier League

Liverpool manager Arne Slot sacked (AP Photo/Jon Super, File) Liverpool have parted company with manager Arn Slot following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, ending the Dutchman’s two-year spell at Anfield just one season after leading the club to Premier League glory.The decision was confirmed by Liverpool’s ownership group, Fenway Sports Groupwho described the move as difficult but insisted it was necessary to help the club progress after a frustrating title defense that finished in fifth place.Slot arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2024 as Jürgen Klopp’s successor and was an immediate success. In his first season, he led the Reds to their 20th Premier League title, level with the all-time record and allaying fears about life after Klopp.However, expectations were much higher for the following campaign. Liverpool heavily supported Slota in the transfer market, spending $570 million to strengthen the squad. High-profile arrivals including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Alexander Isak failed to deliver consistently, while injuries further complicated the situation throughout the season.The club also had to deal with the tragic death of Portugal international Diogo Jota last summer, an event that cast a shadow over the campaign.In a statement, the owners of Liverpool explained the reasons for this decision.“Together we have come to the conclusion that change is necessary for the club to move forward.“It must be emphasized again that this is not a decision that was reached lightly, anything but.Despite the dismissal, Liverpool paid tribute to Sloto’s achievements and contribution during his time at the club.“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC during his time with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly for our fans and for us – successful.“Our appreciation for all he has achieved could not be greater, especially as it has been backed up by a work ethic, diligence and level of expertise that further underscores our view that he is a leader in his field.”Liverpool also confirmed that the search for Sloto’s replacement has already begun as the club look to bounce back from a disappointing season and re-establish themselves among the top teams in English and European football.
