Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday (November 6, 2026) said that the threat by a group led by an MLA to lay siege to his house over the Zubeen Garg death case posed a danger to his family.
He told reporters in Guwahati that the threat would be brought to the notice of the Supreme Court and the Gauhati High Court as it could amount to attempted murder.
The Zubeen Garg Nyay Samiti, led by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, on Thursday (November 5, 2026) said it would lay siege to the Chief Minister’s residence if Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, the two main accused in the Garg death case, are granted bail.
Garg died while swimming in the sea off an island in Singapore on 19 September 2025. Seven people, including Mr Mahanta and Mr Sharma, have been arrested in connection with the death, which Singaporean authorities say was accidental.
However, on 25 November 2025, the Chief Minister told the 126-member Assembly that Garg’s death was “plain and simple murder”.
He said on Friday (November 7, 2026) that what he had said in the rally was reflected in the charge sheet filed by the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe Garg’s death.
Referring to the bail granted by the Gauhati High Court on October 9 to singer Amritprava Mahanta, also an accused in the Garg death case, he pointed out that 160 witnesses had named her during the SIT investigation but not during the hearing.
“People should question the witnesses, not me. The court should be allowed to do its job,” the chief minister said, adding that the threat of a siege on his residence was a “serious matter”.
“Calling for a protest near the chief minister’s residence and not his office is a threat to my family and could amount to a direct attempt to murder,” he said, directing the legal department to bring the matter to the notice of the courts.
“The threat, after creating the impression that the two accused (Mr. Mahanta and Mr. Sharma) will be released on bail, is a conspiracy to create unrest in the state,” the chief minister said.
