No Suryakumar Yadav in Asian Games longlist; Vaibhav Sooryavanshi among 30 likely
Suryakumar Yadav and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (Image: X and IPL) Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned a place in India’s 30-man list of men’s cricket probables for the 2026 Asian Games, while two of the country’s biggest stars, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, are notable absentees. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has submitted a longlist to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ahead of the Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19 to October 4.The omission of Gill and Suryakumar is largely due to India’s busy international calendar. The Asian Games cricket competition will overlap with India’s home white-ball series against the West Indies, forcing the selectors to field separate teams for the two tasks.Clash Forces Two Team Strategy PlanningThe India vs West Indies series consists of three ODIs and five T20 Internationals that will run from 27 September to 17 October. With Gill expected to lead the Indian ODI side during this series, the selectors decided against his inclusion in the Asian Games pool. The Asian Games cricket competition is scheduled between 24 September and 3 October, which represents a significant overlap and requires a larger player base from which to select two teams. As a result, the BCCI has prepared a 30-man list of players who may be allocated to both tournaments depending on the requirements of the final squad. No place for Suryakumar YadavPerhaps the biggest surprise is the absence of current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. The decision suggests that the selectors can now look forward to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next cycle of the T20 World Cup. With a younger core emerging, Suryakumar’s omission suggests he may no longer be central to India’s long-term T20 plans.
