Bangladesh hold their breath: Opener Shadman Islam stretches out after fielding injury in second Test; the hosts are in danger of being reduced to 10 players
Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam was stretchered off the field after twisting his ankle on the second morning of the second Test against the West Indies in Sylhet on Friday. The incident took place in the 78th over of West Indies’ first innings when Shadman chased down a ball bowled by Amir Jangoo to fine leg. The opener slipped while trying to stop the ball and immediately fell in pain near the boundary. He remained on the ground for several minutes before being taken away on a stretcher.Shadman was taken to the hospital for an MRI scan and is currently under observation. A decision on his availability for the rest of the match will be made after the results of the scan. The morning dew made the field near the boundary ropes wet and slippery, The Daily Star reported. Earlier in the day, Bangladeshi pacer Hasan Mahmud also slipped while trying to stop a delivery.“He sprained his left ankle and was taken to hospital for an MRI scan,” BCB physio Bayzediul Islam said in a statement.Bangladesh bowled out West Indies for 356 on the second day after lunch. In Shadman’s absence, they sent Nayeem Hasan, who has not batted above No. 8 before this match, to open alongside Tanzid Hasan.Shadman scored a century in the first Test, but it is unclear whether he will be able to take part in the ongoing match.Bangladesh cannot bring in a concussion replacement if Shadman is ruled out with an ankle injury unrelated to the head injury. This means they would have to continue with only 10 players for the remainder of the Test.West Indies lead the two-match series 1-0.
