The state government has decided to introduce bilingual (medium English and Kannada) classes starting from Class 1 in all government schools across the state from the academic year 2027-2028.

School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa recently announced at a high-level meeting of industrialists and CEOs on ‘CSR Partnership in Karnataka Education System’ at Vidhana Soudha that to ensure quality education, the state government has taken steps to introduce bilingual classes in government schools and the enrollment of students in these classes is encouraging. “That is why bilingual classes will be introduced in all government schools across the state from the next academic year,” he said.

He further stated that there is a proposal to introduce bilingual classes in all schools across the state from the current academic year. “However, teachers require special training to conduct bilingual classes. In addition, steps have been initiated to recruit approximately 10,000 teachers for government schools, a process expected to be completed within three to four months. These new teachers along with existing staff will be trained and bilingual courses will be introduced in all government schools from the next academic year,” he added.

9,522 bilingual schools

Currently, there are 46,757 government primary and secondary schools in the state, with an enrollment of approximately 43,000 students.

LKG and UKG (preschool) classes have been introduced in approximately 7,500 state schools. Furthermore, bilingual classes for grades 1 to 5 were started in a total of 9,522 state schools.

“Earlier, children were not enrolled in government schools because LKG and UKG classes were not available; instead, parents chose to enroll their children in private schools. Hence, our government prioritized the introduction of LKG and UKG classes. Last year, LKG and UKG classes were started in 1,008 government schools in the Kalyana region of Karnataka,” enrolled in just 42 days.00 students. said Mr Bangarappa.
