Elections to the 582 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC) in the state held on Thursday were largely peaceful, barring sporadic incidents of violence, especially in the Rayalaseema region.

Out of 2,53,96,669 voters, 1,48,70,495 (58.55%) exercised their right to vote in 30,994 polling booths by 3 pm, according to information provided by the State Election Commission (SEC).

Those queuing at the end of voting (5pm) at several locations were given extra time to cast their votes. A total of 2169 candidates were in the fray for the ZPTC. The total number of ZPTC is 659, of which 77 candidates were declared unanimously elected.

There were stray incidents in Kadapa, Chittoor and some other districts, including the reported hurling of petrol bombs near a polling station near Pulivendula. Police personnel swung into action and dispersed the conflicting TDP and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) activists. Stone pelting was reported in Jammalamadugu, Rajampeta, Railway Kodur and Badvel areas.

Kotia village

There was tension in the Kotia group of villages bordering Odisha as a large number of supporters of various parties tried to obstruct the vote due to a simmering dispute over which state the village belongs to. These villages fall under the Salur constituency of Parvatipuram – Manyam district under the States Reorganization Act, 1956.

Elections were held without incident in the Maoist-affected areas of Polavaram and East Godavari districts, where special attention was paid to transport voters to polling stations that were not easily accessible. Heavy rain caused by Cyclone Murasu wreaked havoc in many places as low-lying areas were flooded.

Voting took place under tight security in 8,904 sensitive and 7,160 hypersensitive polling stations, most of which are located in Rayalaseema, where violence marred the filing of nominations for the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections.

A total of 7,767 Mandal Parishad Area Constituencies (MPTC) participated in the elections where 18,843 candidates were in the arena. The number of MPTC is 9,821 out of which 2,051 candidates were elected unanimously.

State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha inspected voting in various polling stations in NTR and Krishna districts earlier in the day.
