1. Bidadi Township: 22% of landowners in seven villages near Bengaluru will receive compensation within three months
About 22% of the total number of landowners in the seven villages notified for the Bidadi township project have received compensation, while the rest have either not agreed to the division of their land or have yet to receive compensation. The final notifications for the other two villages were issued recently and the process of payment of compensation has just started.
Farmers opposed to the project say the figures reflect a general reluctance among farmers to share their land, while officials of the implementing agency Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) say the process is lengthy and takes time. Referring to the data, officials added that many farmers purchased land elsewhere after opting for cash compensation.
2. Sugarcane farmers stop marching towards Belagavi in ’Jail Bharo’ protest
Police arrested over 100 sugarcane farmers who participated in the ‘Bharo Jail’ protest in Belagavi on November 5. The arrested farmers include prominent leaders Chunappa Pujeri, Shashikant Padasalagi Guruji and Prem Chougala.
Mr. Pujeri and Mr. Chougala were detained at the Mukti Math premises on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway, while Mr. Guruji and others were detained near Mudalagi where they were leading a padayatra (march).
Detention is governed by the ban issued under BNSS 163 by the district administration. The order banned all protests along the National Highway, Hindalaga Jail and some other areas.
3. Private bus fares rise after KSRTC hike; commuters face holiday burden
Commuters from Bengaluru to various destinations in Karnataka and other neighboring states are facing a steep hike in private bus fares following the recent price hike by state transport companies, adding to their financial burden during the festive season when demand for travel is high.
Private bus operators have significantly hiked fares on several routes, with commuters claiming that fares have gone up disproportionately, especially on weekends and holidays. Popular routes connecting Bengaluru with Mangaluru, Hubballi and Belagavi have seen a surge as demand for tickets increases during the festive season.
