To avoid the loss of an academic year for students who could not appear for the scheduled semester examination in any subject or who failed in one or more subjects, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has decided to conduct ‘on-demand examinations’.
With the introduction of the on-demand exam system, students will no longer have to wait for the university to announce the supplementary exam schedule. The University will be ready to conduct examinations at a time convenient to students based on their requirements even for one student. Students can even request to write exams on public holidays.
Speaking to The Hindu, S. Vidyashankar, Vice-Chancellor of VTU said, “With the intention of providing more convenience to the students, we have decided to introduce on-demand exams. We have also made all the necessary preparations for this initiative. Even if a single student wants to appear for the exam, we will conduct it for him.”
VTU has decided to announce the results within 24 hours of the exam for students who appear for these exams on request.
VTU has instructed all affiliated engineering colleges under its jurisdiction to inform students about this opportunity. Details regarding eligibility, exam schedule and application process will be announced soon.
Among the public colleges in the state, VTU is the first to take up such an initiative. There are 220 technical colleges under the jurisdiction of VTU, with approximately three thousand students currently studying. Around 70,000 students secure admission every year. On average, around 20% of students fail in one or more subjects in each semester examination. Previously, such students had to wait six to seven months before appearing for exams again.
VTU will use artificial intelligence (AI) to prepare questions. There is already a bank of 500-600 questions for each subject. The University has also made necessary arrangements and deployed necessary staff to conduct these examinations.
