Two arrested after video of women being slapped over alleged religious conversion goes viral

Two men were arrested by the Meerpet police in Hyderabad on Tuesday (November 3, 2026) night in connection with the assault of two young Christian women in Almasgud after a video of the incident, which allegedly took place last month, went viral on social media.

The accused have been identified as Lakshmi Narayana and Sashivardhan. The Meerpet police have registered a case against the two men. Inspector B. Shobhan said the women had visited a woman identified as Mary and were returning when they were confronted and attacked. Police are investigating further details of the incident.

The video shows a group of men interrogating two women for allegedly trying to convert people to Christianity by luring schoolchildren with chocolate. The women denied the allegations, saying they had gone to visit their aunt. One of them was heard pleading with the men to let them go.

In the video, a man can be heard accusing them of attempting religious conversions and demanding that their luggage be checked for books. The women were seen being repeatedly slapped while the men used abusive language against them.

The incident reportedly took place near the statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar at Almasgud, under Meerpet Police Station. The video was widely circulated on social media on Tuesday.

Former Telangana minister and Bharat Rashtra Samihti (BRS) MLA Sabitha Indra Reddy on Wednesday (November 4, 2026) condemned the attack and urged the police to identify those responsible and take legal action. She said any objections to religious activities should be dealt with through legal means, not physical violence.

The incident highlighted the need for complaints about alleged religious conversion activities to be addressed through legal channels, not through intimidation or assault.
