Former Kozhikode mayor and senior CPI(M) leader TP Dasan passed away

Former Kozhikode Mayor and senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) leader TP Dasan (76) passed away.

He had not been keeping well for some time. Mr. Dasan was admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode after his condition worsened on Friday (May 29, 2026) night and breathed his last around 11.45 pm. He was a committee member of the CPI(M) for Kozhikode urban area.

A prominent organizer in the cooperative sector, Mr. Dasan has also headed the State Sports Council twice. He was a member of the party’s district secretariat for a long time. Mr. Dasan became the Mayor of Kozhikode in 1992 and remained in office for the next two years. He was also the Chairman of the Society’s Standing Committee on Urban Development from 1996 to 2001.

Born in Koyilandy in 1950, Mr. Dasan joined the CPI(M) in 1967. He began his political work through the Kerala Students’ Federation, the predecessor of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and the Kerala Socialist Youth Federation, the predecessor of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).

Mr. Dasan later became the first State President of DYFI and later its State Secretary. Although he worked as a physical education teacher for some time, Mr. Dasan lost his job after participating in an anti-government strike in 1973. He also contributed in the cooperative sector and worked as the chairman of the Calicut Cooperative Urban Bank.

Mr. Dasan is survived by his wife, TV Lalitha Prabha, former Chairperson of the Works Standing Committee, Kozhikode Corporation, and two daughters. His last rites will be held on Sunday (May 31, 2026).
