‘It’ll be suicide’: Robin Singh on tactical battle that could decide PSG vs Arsenal in Champions League final

NEW DELHI: The UEFA Champions League final between defending champions Paris Saint-Germain and newly-crowned Premier League champions Arsenal has been billed as the ‘best attack’ (PSG) vs. “best defense” (Arsenal). On the biggest night in European football, the world will witness two opposing philosophies built by two Spanish coaching legends. Luis Enrique’s attacking machine will collide with the defensive fortress that Mikel Arteta has spent years building at Arsenal. And if any matchup proves that there are multiple ways to reach the pinnacle of the “beautiful game,” it’s this one.PSG are looking to become only the second team after Real Madrid to win back-to-back UCL crowns, while Arsenal will be looking to make history by winning their first UCL after ending a 22-year title drought in England. On their trip to the Puskas Arena, PSG have already scored 44 times in 16 games – just shy of Barcelona’s all-time record of 45 in one edition, set in 1999-2000. Conversely, the London side, who are the only unbeaten team in the competition, have conceded just six goals and kept nine clean sheets, a testament to their superb defensive skills.Offense meets defense on football’s biggest stageFormer India footballer and pundit Robin Singh believes Arteta will resist any temptation to push against Luis Enrique’s free-flowing side.“It will be suicidal for Arsenal to come out and try to beat a PSG side that relies on the pace of Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia and Desiré Doué,” Singh said in an exclusive interaction with Timesofindia.com, mediated by Sony Sports.“I expect Arteta to use Rice and Zubimendi as two defensive midfielders in front of his defensive line and try to stop the midfield moving. Just like we talk about the forwards of this PSG side to play football.” Battle for controlVitinha is a fulcrum for PSG, keeping them up to speed both in attack and midfield. The Portuguese has made 227 incisive passes from the center of the pitch this Champions League season – 44 more than any other player. Arsenal’s Declan Rice will have to cut back on the creativity in order for PSG’s midfield to have less of an impact. “It’s also under the control of Joao Neves, Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz or whoever plays in midfield. So to keep them up Arsenal will have to get two defensive midfielders.” Singh said. This is not the same Arsenal that dismantled PSG over two legs in last year’s semi-final. Arteta’s men have grown up.“He’s built a side that’s so strong defensively,” Singh said, reflecting on the differences he’s seen since last season.“They’re much harder to play against. They’re happy to play less pretty football to make sure they’re a cohesive unit. Defensive solidity, clean sheets won, new titles – that’s what Arteta has done and has done for this Arsenal team.”Arsenal problem with KvaratskheliaArguably the best right-back in the world at the moment, Achraf Hakimi is doubtful for the match and could be a big mistake for Luis Enrique. His overlapping threat from right-back could be devastating against Arsenal’s exposed left wing.Mikel Arteta also struggles at right-back with both Ben White and Jurien Timber recovering from injury. However, to contain PSG’s most dangerous striker, Georgian ‘George Best’ Khavicha Kvaratskhelia, the Timber may have to come back in a race against time. The Georgian’s numbers are simply astounding. His seven goals and three assists make him the top goalscorer in the knockout rounds this season, and when he assisted Dembélé in the semi-final against Bayern Munich, he became the first player in Champions League history to score or assist in seven consecutive knockout games in the same campaign. “I think it could be an idea for Timber to play, but he has to prove himself in training for Arteta to pick him,” Singh said, adding: “It’s one of the biggest nights in Champions League football for Arsenal to win the two biggest cups in Europe, as some would say, which is the Premier League and now the Champions League. So I think that’s why Arteta and Timber want to start.”Singh added how Timber’s presence can change the game. Kvaratskhelia’s ball-carrying abilities would give any defender a chance for life, and his 141 progressive tackles this Champions League season have seen him travel 1,557 meters up the field.Five of his goals in the 2025–26 competition came directly from these transfers. And Arsenal desperately need the Dutchman to play as he is their best – and probably only – hope of keeping Kvaratskhelia. “Pressure is a privilege. Heavy is the head that always wears the crown,” said the former India striker.“PSG have the experience of big European nights. But sometimes freshness brings a bit of unpredictability and that’s what Luis Enrique would count on.”Differences waiting in reserveSpeaking about the strength on the bench, Singh said: “If you need a solid defence, Arsenal are much more prepared from the bench. If you look at the forwards, I still feel that PSG can bring in players who can change the game.”Singh pointed to Kai Havertz and Bradley Barcola as the most likely game changers in both dugouts. Havertz, who scored Chelsea’s winner in the 2021 final against Manchester City, could be decisive in the later stages of the match. PSG carry the weight of champions. who refuse to quit and will hope to keep their crown. Arsenal arrive with carpe diem in their hearts and history on their backs as they find themselves in the UCL final for the first time since 2006.And should Arsenal get over the line, they would also become only the 25th club ever to win the European Cup or Champions League, having played 225 games in the competition – more than any other club to never lift the trophy. On Saturday night in Budapest, only one side will have the last laugh.Watch UEFA Champions League 2025/26 – Final – PSG vs Arsenal on 30 May 2026 from 21:30 IST Live on Sony Sports Ten 2 SD & HD, Sony Sports Ten 3 Hindi SD & HD, Sony Sports Ten 4 SD & HD (Tamil, Telugu and Kannada) and Sony LIV.
