The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday (November 3, 2026) announced that theaters across the state can now screen newly released Tamil films for up to six shows a day, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. the next day, for one week from the date of release.

According to an official release on the instructions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957 would be suitably amended. The state government also allowed six shows a day on local festival days, holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The decision was taken based on representations made by various film producers’ associations to the state government. After the TVK-led government came into office, permission was granted to screen newly released Tamil films for five shows a day for seven days from the date of release. Five performances a day were also allowed on local festival days, holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
