Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30, a day after a collision on the pitch

Spanish football was left in mourning on Tuesday after CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died following a serious collision on the pitch with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a second division match. He was 30.

Tenerife confirmed the death of Jesus de Miguel in a statement, saying he died at 8am local time on Tuesday 3 November, a day after the incident at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodrguez López.

The tragedy occurred in the closing stages of Monday’s 2-2 draw between Tenerife and Andorra. De Miguel chased down a long ball as Owono raced out of his penalty area to intercept it. The goalkeeper’s knee hit the Tenerife striker in the chest during the challenge, leaving him unconscious on the pitch.

Medical personnel rushed to tend to De Miguel, with emergency treatment continuing for more than five minutes. The attacker suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and was resuscitated by paramedics who managed to restore a pulse before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

The match was abandoned seven minutes after the break to allow medical teams to treat the injured player. Owono received a straight red card after the incident.

‘NO WORDS ABOUT COMFORT’

De Miguel was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Nuestra Seora de Candelaria University Hospital in Santa Cruz. Tenerife initially described his condition as stable despite his severity. However, the club subsequently reported a worsening of his neurological condition before confirming his death on Tuesday morning.

“Overwhelmed by pain, with a lump in my throat and unable to believe that this is true, we from CD Tenerife announce the tragic death of Jesse de Miguel Alameda,” the club said in a statement.

“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this feeling of overwhelming grief. We stand with his devastated family, with his loved ones, with all tinerfeism who are crying today over this cruel outcome.”

De Miguel began his senior football journey with Leganes B in 2015 and has represented eight other Spanish clubs during his career. He came to Tenerife last year and was part of the team that returned to the second Spanish league in 2026.

The death of the 30-year-old player has caused an outpouring of condolences from the football community. FC Andorra also expressed their support for De Miguel, his family and Tenerife following the serious incident.

Tenerife said De Miguel’s family thanked everyone for their messages of support and asked for privacy during their time of grief.
