Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has ordered officials to remain on high alert as Cyclone Murasu nears the coast, even as the state is yet to recover from the damage caused by Cyclone Arnab.

In a review meeting with senior Panchayat Raj and Rural Development and Rural Supply Department officials on Monday, Mr. Kalyan said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extremely heavy rains in Nellore, Prakasam, Markapuram, Bapatla and Krishna districts.

In view of the forecast of heavy rainfall, he stressed the need to evacuate people living in low-lying areas to safer places, ensure proper coordination between departments, minimize hardship and prevent loss of life.

Officials informed the Deputy Chief Minister that the cyclone was initially predicted to cross the coast between Bapatla and Machilipatnam. However, she changed course and was now expected to land near Nellore.

Heavy rain has already lashed Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Tirupati and Markapuram districts under the influence of the cyclone.

Six teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and seven teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) remained on standby, officials said. They added that other necessary precautions are being taken.
